Solantro Semiconductor Awarded $4 Million in Funding from Ontario Innovation Demonstration Fund for Game Changing Advances in Renewable Energy and Smart Grid Management
OTTAWA ON CANADA December 18, 2013: The Hon. Bob Chiarelli, Minister of Energy and MPP Ottawa West-Nepean has announced that Solantro has been awarded a $4 million repayable loan from the Ministry of Research and Innovation - Innovation Demonstration Fund (IDF). This IDF supported project will demonstrate the latest silicon and power electronics solutions for renewable, distributed power and advanced smart power-grid management. This project will demonstrate effective integration of these novel technologies as a support and evolution for today’s aging power-grid. In addition to addressing climate change concerns through the accelerated displacement of fossil fuels, this project will create a minimum of 20 new high value jobs in Ontario.
“We are giving Ontario companies, like Solantro, the tools they need to compete and win in the global marketplace. Today’s announcement will not only mean new jobs in the Ottawa-area, but it will help secure our place as a world leader in renewable energy manufacturing,” noted the Minister during a tour of Solantro’s Ottawa facilities.
Solantro is a fabless semiconductor company, delivering highly integrated and scalable power management platforms for renewable energy and grid management applications. These specialized chipsets and Reference Platforms provide a game-changing level of system integration and technology for providers of distributed renewable power generation, storage and management systems with unbeatable features, performance, reliability and economics.
By integrating much of the power conversion / energy management functionality into silicon, Solantro is able to bring intelligent and customizable chipsets and Reference Platforms to the Grid-Tied Solar PV, Off-Grid/Micro-Grid, Grid-Tied Storage and Smart-Grid markets.
It is anticipated that the major deliverable of this program will be field demonstrations of a suite of products and applications built around Solantro’s chipsets and Reference Platforms from manufacturers of renewable energy and grid management products on a worldwide basis. These demonstrations are intended to validate implementation cost targets, quality metrics and energy efficiency of a distributed power generation / storage / management model. Solantro has partnered with Celestica as a manufacturing partner to demonstrate these technology platforms and ensure a validated product that meets customer needs.
“We are pleased to work with the Ontario Government and Celestica - partners who share our commitment to imagine, innovate and build out a dynamic compelling view of the evolution of the renewable energy marketplace,” said Solantro’s Founder and CEO Antoine Paquin.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that global demand for electricity will grow by over 70% by 2035, requiring an investment of $6.8 trillion to upgrade and extend the worldwide electricity distribution network. Renewable energy and in particular Solar PV, is a large part of the solution to meeting this increasing global need. However, there are many challenges associated with managing the dynamics of distributed renewable energy generation, storage and load management to efficiently balance power generation and demand. Solantro addresses these challenges through specially developed control software running on its custom integrated circuits. Ontario’s Green Energy and Clean Economy Act has established a progressive policy context for accelerating development of a robust, Ontario based clean technology sector, and position the province as a global leader in sustainable energy programs.
“Ontario is proud to partner with innovative companies like Solantro that are turning new ideas into energy solutions and great jobs for Ontarians. We are proud to support the development and commercialization of clean technologies that will not only bring environmental benefits but will boost the economy while improving the quality of life for people across Ontario.”
Reza Moridi, Minister of Research and Innovation
Solantro has developed a family of programmable and reconfigurable power management chipsets that form the backbone of power conversion, energy storage and grid-management reference designs. These allow manufacturers of distributed renewable energy systems to achieve reduced time to market and capital efficiency with their product design cycles. The IDF contribution will result in demonstrations with various renewable energy and power grid management customers in various application configurations. The project will demonstrate the real-world cost, performance, and implementation advantages associated with specialized, highly integrated chipset-based solutions.
Celestica, a world leader in the delivery of end-to-end supply chain solutions, will contribute their expertise to advance the commercialization of the Solantro technology, supply white label PV-Modules for validation and provide prototype manufacturing. Celestica will also act as a demonstration host for field trials and qualification verification. More information on Celestica can be found on their website: www.celestica.com
